how can i turn .mpg to .mp3 or any other music file?

is there a free program that can do this? is it even possible?

mpg files are VIDEO files. MP3 files are AUDIO files. MPEG Files have embedded MP2 files for the audio portion. You can use a program like tmpgenc to separate the audio from the video into two separate files.
