Three New Testament passages throw some light on these words. Matthew 24:15 and 2 Thessalonians 2:3-4 and in Revelation 13.
Addressing Jewish people, Jesus said, " Therefore when you see the abomination of desolation, spoken of by Daniel the prophet, standing in the holy place, ...then let those who are in Judea flee " (Mt.24:15).
It appears that the image of Antichrist will be placed in the temple and that people will be ordered to worship it. This is the abominable event that will trigger the desolation of the temple and the city of Jerusalem at the end of the age.
Paul, instructing Christian believers about the coming time of Tribulation that will precede Christ's return to set up His kingdom, declared that during this period of trouble the "man of sin" will be revealed, describing him as one " who opposes and exalts himself above all that is called God and that is worshiped, so that he sits as God in the temple of God, showing himself that he is God " (2 Th. 2:3-4).
Revelation 13 tells us that he will start a war against saints and blaspheme God. Then, his partner, the False Prophet, will make an image of the beast (Antichrist) and demand that people worship it or die.
Jesus and Paul both indicated that this outrageous blasphemy will take place in the restored Jewish Temple. The devil himself as the Antifather (the dragon of Rev. 13:4), the Antichrist (the beast), and the Antispirit (the False Prophet) are the infernal trinity. They will attempt to make the restored Jewish Temple their religious headquarters, the place where they will be worshiped.
While we may be puzzled about the term " abomination of desolation " in the holy place, The Jewish people to whom Jesus spoke understood it. They know that according to Daniel 9:24-27 a hostile Gentile ruler would someday desecrate their temple and initiate horrendous persecution. While Luke 21:20-24 contain some elements that were partially fulfilled in the destruction of Jerusalem and the temple in AD 70, Matthew 24:15-31 focuses more on the endtime.
There will be:
* Enough fear to drive the Jews to the hills (vv.16-18)
* Unparalled trouble and woe (vv.19-20)
* False Christs and prophets (vv.23-26)
* Startling celestial signs and the visible descent of the Son of Man " with power and glory " (vv.29-31)
These will be the signs that the end of the age is near.

The Desolation of Abominations or Abomination of Abominations was the sacreligious desecration by erecting a pagan statue in the Holy of Holies of the Jerusalem Temple.

Daniel 11:31 reveals that the antichrist’s government (or “armed forces”) will “rise up to desecrate the temple fortress and will abolish the daily sacrifice.” Then, it is written, “they will set up the abomination that causes desolation.”

It is also written, in Matthew 25, “So when you see standing in the holy place ‘the abomination that causes desolation,’ …then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains. Let no one on the roof of his house go down to take anything out of the house. Let no one in the field go back to get his cloak…For then there will be great distress, unequaled from the beginning of the world until now--and never to be equaled again.” (Matt 24:15-18, 21)

It is Abomination of Desolation and the abomination is the future dictator who is to rise up and ally with the AntiChrist. He will enter the temple in Jerusalem and bring about Desolation in the holy land.

This first occurred in the time between the Testaments, and you can find the account in the Apocryphal work of I & II Macabees.

This was prophesied by Daniel, in Daniel 9. Jesus says that another fulfillment of the prophecy will occur in the future as well. "So when you see the abomination that causes desolation, mentioned by the prophet Daniel, standing in the Holy Place (let the reader take note), then those who are in Judea must flee to the mountains." (Matthew 24:15-16)

The abomination originally was Antiochus Ephiphanes IV roasting a pig on the altar of God in Jersusalem. The future abomination will be similar in that the anti-christ will proclaim himself to be God, and demand worship.

"Do not let anyone deceive you in any way, for that day cannot come unless the rebellion takes place first and the man of sin, who is destined for destruction, is revealed. He opposes and exalts himself above every so-called god and object of worship. As a result, he seats himself in the sanctuary of God and declares himself to be God." (II Thessalonians 2:3-4)

Spoken of by Daniel? It is not told in the Bible exactly. But the prophecy had one fulfillment back in 70 AD when Jerusalem was destroyed. Anti-christ is one good theory.
