"A digital camera is an electronic device used to capture and store photographs electronically instead of using photographic film like conventional cameras".
So, it needs to be powered to be able to be used.
Most cameras either use AA size batteries, and others use rechargeable Lithium batteries. (the most cost effective way is to buy rechargeable AA's if your camera uses them).
All cameras require a memory card to store pictures...and these cards are available in certain types (Secure Digital, SD...Compact Flash, CF...xD-Picture Card etc).
and they are available in certain capacities.
So, dependant on which type of camera and how many megapixels (MP) it has, you buy a card which would suit your needs.
e.g...a 6mp camera which uses a 512MB memory card can take approx. 170 photos...a card half that capacity (256mb) can take half that number etc etc.

A digital camera uses an electronic sensor element and stores your picture as a digital file --- a series of 1's and 0's. How many pictures you can take depends upon (1) the resolution of your camera, and (2) the size of your memory. The size of your picture is measured in "pixels" --- picture elements. Multiply the numbers to find the total pixels: a 640 x 480 picture will have 307,200 pixels. A megapixel means 1 million pixels. A 16 Mbyte memory will store 12 of the 4.0 Megapixel photos, 13 of the 3.5 Megapixel photos, 15 of the 3.1 Megapixels photos, 21 of the 2.1 Megapixel photos or 36 of the 1.1 Megapixel photos. Many cameras will accept a "memory card" to increase your storage. A 128 Mbyte card will store 97 of the 4 Megapixel photos.

You could buy memory card or memory stick that holds up to 5,000 photographs. With a digital camera you have to look at the LCD screen to see what you're taking a picture of. If you buy a really good digital camera, you could zoom in from long distance, and you could capture objects far away on the sides.
