Can we watch a portable DVD player on the plane we are flying with U.S. Airways?

In April i flew on continental and you were not allowed to

I got off a US-Airways flight today and watched stuff on my laptop. It's not a portable DVD player, but I don't see why they would be singled out. I am also pretty sure I saw people with portable dvd players on the flight.
