Just make sure to have a doctors note of having metal inside him and also the location is good to have even though most of the time not necessary. Show it to them prior to your son going through as others said this is the best way to do it. Allow maybe an extra 5 min to go through security and you will be fine.

If you happen to forget this note however, even obviously it would be unintentionally they can deny you clearance through security so it is extremely important for him to have this. Make sure to put it right away where you know there is not a chance of forgetting it.

This is no big deal, but it will slow you down slightly in security. I have a prosthetic hip, and an articial leg with metal parts as well. Before I enter the metal detector, I tell the officials standing by that I will set it off. Then I walk through and it goes off. Then they do a hand check with a smaller metal detector, find what was expected from my statement and I am allowed to go on to my gate. It adds maybe 2 minutes to the time spent in security, but more if there's a line for "hand checks."

Make sure some people are watching the bags of the whole group during this delay. This is an easy place for someone to steal purses, handbags, backpacks, etc. The delay makes it a even a bit easier.

If he has that then he will get a Picture ID card with the mini Xray picture on it stating the day of operation, where the part is and the doctors name with phone number . My friend has on of those too ! Makes it easier in the Airports.

Go through the handicapped lane if the airport has one and explain to te officer. It may help to bring a doctor's note. Good luck!

Doctor's note. My dad has metal in his knee. He finds that if he presents the documentation BEFORE he gets metal-scanned, he gets the full-on, roughed-up, strip-search treatment. If he presents the documents AFTER they scan and ask him: "Sir, do you have metal on you?" The TSA people are much kinder and gentler with him. Either way... having the documents helps.
