Try to convince him you are going to help him winning your best friends heart. Show him you care for his feelings and spend some time with him. I'm sure you will be more than fine and he will know he can trust you. And who knows... he might fall in love with you! :) Don't forget to warn your best friend first! She'll have an important role in this project!
