I'm looking to buy my first car, and I've heard that Volvos were the most reliable and safest. I'm 22, female and don't know much about cars, so I'm a bit nervous about this whole car buying thing. The volvo I'm looking at is a 1991, four door, white, black leather seats, about 175,000kms. I believe it's a front wheel drive. I will forsure be bringing a male friend with me to the dealership, but he's already told me that he doesn't know much about those cars. Any information you could give me about them would be VERY much appreciated.

I have a 1985 Volvo 740 with 360,000 km on it and it still runs great. Bought it for $900. Volvos are bulletproof and the eighties and early ninties models can be maintained by a backyard mechanic. They are also built like tanks. My car was in a front end collision before I bought it and other than the terrible paint job (on the rest of the car) I couldn't tell by looking at it and it drives smoothly.

The car will be due for a timing belt at 200,000km and it is worth it to get a mechanic to look it over before you buy. This will give you some dickering leverage or convice you to buy something in better shape (although it sounds like a great car). It's probably a rear wheel drive since the FWD 850 didn't come out until 92 I think.

If it is a 940/960 it will require more maintenance than a 740/760 and be more expensive to buy, but they are still great cars. I havent seen any car that will last as long as a Volvo that requires minimum maintenance, and doesn't cost an arm and a leg. (Toyotas, Hondas, Volkswagens and Mercedes are good, but you pay for it).

i'd not evaluate any Volvo later than the 940 form. The later Volvos are very complicated and extremely extreme priced to fix. My very last Volvo purchase develop right into a sparkling S90 in 1997 and it grew to develop into out to be the worst motor vehicle i have ever had. issues failed on that motor vehicle which have by no skill failed on nay different motor vehicle i have ever owned, which includes each and every of the ten different Volvos. the first 3 hundred and sixty 5 days S80s were an abomination also. Now Volvo has yet another trash pile contained in the XC90. The older pink engine 4-cylinder Volvos were the ultimate ever.

as with any used car BEFORE you purchase it have it checked over by YOUR trusted mechanic. if you don't have one take car to the brand dealer[sic Volvo] and have them check it out. even if the check over price seems high, it will be much lower than the cost of buying and repairing a pig. THIS BEING SAID if it is a 91 model it probably is rear wheel drive [2, 7, 9,] series these have been solid cars and w/ only 175 kilometers on the clock may be due for timing belt and related services. note. it was rumored in the states that on certain Volvo models in Europe [probably fwd] used the 1.7 liter Renault engine [ from allaince/encore-r9 / r11] these engines were very tough but you better replace the timing belt at or before specified intervals and never let it run hot. good luck and remember all used car salesmen lie like a politician up for reelection, worldwide so becareful and aware

I'm also 22, I've used Volvos as a nanny. They're safe cars, but I wouldn't buy one. They're very expensive to fix, and not all that great on gas. A better car (at least in the US) would be a Honda, Toyota, even if you got a newer Saturn, or Ford. Those are good on gas, and cheap to fix. You have to remember that no matter what car you buy if it's 15 years old (like the volvo you're looking at) it's going to have problems that need to be fixed. Hope I didn't discourage you! Good luck! PS go to Vehix.com and research cars, when you go to the dealership remember to be firm and confident.

I have a 1985 Volvo and I love it!! It is my first car. It is built like a tank...very solid and would be safe if you're ever in an accident. It is a great car, but like most people have said on here they are more expensive to repair and as they get older the gas mileage does tend to go down a little bit. However, I haven't had any major problems with mine...mostly just the normal expenses like brakes and tires and oil changes that you would have with any car. If you end up getting one I would recommend finding an independent mechanic that specializes in Volvos if you ever need to have any work done. I was going to to go to the Volvo dealer to have work done once and it was going to cost over $800, but my Dad found a mechanic that charged about half of that. All in all Volvos are great cars...I have enjoyed mine and it still runs great...a great first car!

Isn't Volvo part of Ford now? If so I would leave it on the lot.
