I just bought a jenn air gas grill. Do I need to add that fake charcoal as well?

Yes, as William said, and the reason is this: The lava has an absorption factor, that holds grease and other meat juices that when the grill heats up, vaporizes and helps flavor whatever you are cooking.

If you mean the charcoal slab which comes with some units than yes you do.

Yes, otherwise your food will have that good ol downhome propane taste.
