Without getting yelled at or being taken the wrong way, where was the mom cat? Or did you just assume the kittens were abandoned? I don't want to sound mean that's not my intention, but cats do leave their kittens to hunt. Normally the Mom will wean the kittens at 8-10 weeks. But since you already have the kitten and I guess you are guess the age, you may want to take the kitten to the vet and have them take a look and they can tell you when to give it kitten food. I know lots of people try and do the right thing and have taken the kittens and didn't realize the Mom was just out getting herself a bite to eat and the kittens died. But really let the vet give you the info, they went to school for that. Good Luck KG

She can start to eat some canned food now and you must get a good quality food. Try Natural Balance, Innova Evo, Solid Gold, Eagle Pack. Nothing from the grocery store! It is all crappy food with by-products and unnecessary fillers.
Just feed her small amounts from you finger for a start. If you open a whole can you should transfer it to a glass dish (pyrex) immediately after opening. This can then last for the entire day. You don't have to refrigerate it if you use it up and the weather is cool. If you do refrigerate it you can warm it in a pan of hot water in the dish, just as you would a baby bottle. Cold meat can cause a kitten to throw up.

I would first talk to a vet and make sure the kitten is healthy. Most likely the vet will recommend buying some kitten food and combining it with formula. This will begin to ween the kitten off formula while getting her used to regular kitten food. Make sure you read the back of the food packages, they will tell you the age range for the kitten. Many are for 6 weeks to one year and then you should be stepping up to regular cat food. Make sure that you are keeping in touch with your kittens vet during this whole period as well. Considering the circumstances you really need to make sure she is healthy before even thinking of changing her diet. Good luck and be sure you talk with your vet before anything.

As soon as they are weened, usually about 6-8 weeks. It would be just fine to offer the kitten some food, but offer her food appropriate for her age. She will need some solid food to aide in the teething process. She may not seem interested in it at first, just leave her a fresh bowl of food every day and she will take to it when she is ready. Good luck.

Try giving her some softened kitten food with condensed milk & warm water. I started my litter when they became interested in the mother cat's food. I guess that was about 5 - 6 weeks. They kept trying to eat it, but it was too hard. My mother raised show collies, and I remember her softening the puppy chow with condensed milk. I asked my vet, and that's what was recommended with the kittens -- softened kitten food. It didn't make them sick, but the litter box sure became full in a hurry!!! It was a litter of 5 plus the mama cat.

Actually this is a good time to introduce her to solid food. Formula won't be enough for her now. Dry kitten chow moistened with a little water or mixed with a little kitten formula is good to start with. No canned food yet - it's quite rich for a baby yet. Have the kitty wormed and checked over by a vet and have him give you a feeding schedule for her.

You should only feed kittens proper kitten food until they are one (1) year old. I sometimes give my 5 1/2 month old, cold roast chicken... just peel some out from it. Try giving your kitten a variety of flavours, so don't just buy canned chicken flavour food and dry chicken biscuits (for example)... try to mix in a few flavours (but don't change the brand of food as your kitten can get sick from sudden diet changes.

one the cat is weined off of drinking strictly formula (usually 6-8 weeks old), you can feed her kitten food, which are located in the cat food isle at your store seperatley. the foods are usually softer with more nutrients for the kitten. they reccoment keeping kittens on kitten food for the first year of their lives. good luck!
