Parakeets have such personalities. First I would separate them if you want to bond w/them or if you keep them together they won't be as friendly to you.
Parakeets do have the ability to talk, especially the english budgies. They are smart, funny , bold, and stonger that you think. Mine would go to the water dish and with his beek lift up the door and then put his head out before the door fell down and fly out of his cage like a bat out of hell. Then he would fly over to my Nanday Conure's cage and preen him, then fly over to my cocka tiels cage in the other room and check on her and try to preen her. I had to tie the door closed with twist ties to keep her in when I went to work. (THAT DIDN"T ALWAYS WORK)
I also had a dog and she would fly over to him (golden retrievr) and jump over and on his tail until he chased her. All my birds liked Millet Spray and I would also stick a cuddle bone in their cage. Have fun.

Well there is a good chance that you might be right about the yelling at each other thing. I have seven parakeets right now and just sold all my baby parakeets (i would have kept them except it was just too much). i have three known males and only one known female, my males will typically fight over my female but you shouldn't have that problem since you only have two. Now a male will have a colored cere (that thing above the beak, with the nostrils on it) but the female will have a pale-pink cere. But unless your birds are over 6 months you might not be able to tell. Parakeets are great pets and very easy to breed, but breeding is the only real reason you would need to know what sex you have. So my best advice is just to give thems names that work for both genders!

As an owner of a wonderful parakeet, Poppy for 3 years, i have grown to know a lot about them.
First, to tell which is a boy and a girl, look right above their beaks. This is called the birds cere. If its purple, its a female, and if its blue, its a male. But, i'm warning you that it takes a few monthes for the color to be accurate. When a bird is still young, all their ceres are purple. (Kind of like how a babies eyes are always blue, although they change later in life.)
Since you have 2 birds, they won't bond as much to you, and probably won't learn to talk as much, since they bond to each other. My parakeet says over 100 PHRASES...due to tons and tons of attention and spoiling.
If you ever have to catch your birds, the easy way to do it is to turn out the lights because they can't see easily in the dark.
I really hope that this helps....parakeets are really amazingly smart and intelligent creatures, but it takes a lot of nourishing to teach them..kind of like teaching a baby to talk...its a repetitive process.
Good luck!

Hey! The way to tell the males from the females is the waxy thing above their beak, called the cere. If it's blue or purple it's probably a male, and if it's pink or brownish it's probably a female. It may change color until they reach maturity. Good luck with your Keets!
