I think that if the decisions were up to the generals then we would not be there in the first place, but now we are, we should pull the forces out and get 640 odd politicians to go and fight themselves. I tell you what, the British involvement in Iraq would end within minutes. Can you imagine the fat arsed politicians putting up with the **** our soldiers are going through. They can"t even talk a good fight, let alone fight a good fight.

Under an ideal system the politicians (who are in theory responsible to the people) make the decision to take military action. Then the military uses its expertise to carry out that action. This process fails in one of two ways. One the politicians give the military too much of a free hand. Early Vietnam is a fine example. Two - the politicians try to micromanage military action The Secretary of Defense creating a disaster by micromanaging the post invasion environment in Iraq. A good balance was probably FDR and General Eisenhower regarding the invasion of France.

The politicians have things so screwed up now someone else who knows what they're doing should be put in charge of cleaning up the mess.

Patton said that politicians start wars and have generals fight them and then end them before it is over leaving the generals to fight the next one.
