Because a direct democracy is not feasible. It is easier for factious groups to gain control through democracy. A republic is designed to withstand the licentiousness of man. It doesn't work perfectly, obviously, our republic has been slowly turning into a socialist country since the New Deal. We need to return to the ideals of our forefathers; strong state government with a weaker central government.

Because a "direct democracy" would be impossible in a country of 300 million. Heck, there would be trouble if there were only 300!
