Cirrhosis is when the liver is so scarred, it can't function properly anymore. It doesn't heal or regenerate . Some people can live years with cirrhosis, but most progress to decompensating cirrhosis, which means the liver is failing and the person will need a transplant. The bad thing is your father in law is an alcoholic; drinking with Hepatitis expedites damage to the liver 5 times faster than for someone who doesn't drink. Your father in law needs to immediately stop drinking. They don't give livers to people who will destroy the new ones, too. The transplant process is a very complicated process. You have to interview with a team of people, from doctors, psychiatrists, financial advisors, etc, and you have to show proof of being alcohol free for at least 6 months. Hopefully your father in law will seek treatment for his alcoholism. If he doesn't, I'm afraid his prognosis won't be good. I have seen many people with this disease refuse to give up drinking until they have severe symptoms of end stage liver disease. Then it's too late. I hope he is able to do the right thing. Best wishes to you and your father in law.

By the way, Labcimas is very wrong.... no one can survive without a liver and there is no dialysis for your liver. It performs over 500 vital functions for the body.

Cirrhosis is the replacement of damaged liver tissue with scar tissue, it does not heal. However, depending on how much liver he has left, it need not be a death sentence. You do not need all your liver to survive. With proper care, the remaining liver will keep working. If only it were possible to have him give up drinking, there would be rapid improvement. Depending on what type of hepatitis he has, that will also heal, with proper care.

Everything depends on him giving up drinking. Which is obviously easier said than done.

Good health to him.

Hope this helps

Although there is no cure for cirrhosis of the liver, there are treatments available that can stop or delay its progress, minimize the damage to liver cells, and reduce complications.

The treatment used depends on the cause of cirrhosis of the liver.

For cirrhosis caused by alcohol abuse, the person must stop drinking alcohol to halt the progression of cirrhosis.
If a person has hepatitis, the doctor may prescribe steroids or antiviral drugs to reduce liver cell injury.

no, it does not heal, and with continued drinking, it will progress more rapidly with the hepatatis added on top of everything. He needs to stop drinking to make sure it doesn't get worse, and they do have medicine to help improve his liver function a little, but what it is is actually scarring of the liver, you can't reverse scar damage.....

No it doesn't heal, and if it is alcohol induced, could well be far too advanced to even begin to recover, speak with the doctors and ask of the probablilities of a liver transplant, it might be the best option, if not the only one open to him now.

hope it all goes well, it is hard to cope with illness in our loved ones.

Unfortunately, cirrhosis is unstoppable and fatal.
It is possible that the cirrhosis can be removed through surgery and he can survive. He will have to stop drinking to survive these two conditions, and even if he does, he may be too far gone now.
Im sorry.
If only people could see the future when they play around with alcohol!

Unfortunately, the only way to cure it is with a liver transplant. Other than that it only worsens until death.
