I assume you're referring to the representative government that we have now?
I think most Americans would be more for direct democracy now than when the system was created. Back in the day, it would take a week to get to a polling place, so it didn't really make sense to try to have a direct democracy.
Additionally, Ancient Greece proved that a direct democracy brings some chaos along with it, so it can be difficult to pull off.
However, I think that American Idol has proven that we're all capable of casting votes electronically. In this day & age, I see no reason why we should not convert to a direct democracy - except for the revolutionary war that would have to come with it, because none of the politicoes is going to be willing to give up their cushy jobs.

For the Philippines, representative democracy proved to be the worst type of democracy among the two. The people want to participate directly in and for the government, this is the real essence of democracy. Here is a part of our constitution in the Philippines (our constitution is somewhat based on some parts of the US constitution), it is the basis of the people on their call for a direct democracy: "Article 1, Section 1. The Philippines is a democratic and republican State. Sovereignty resides in the people and all government authority emanates from them." The representatives usually don't represent the real views and suggestions of the citizens he represents. I think the US dosen't need a direct democracy because it has a strong government leaders at present, in our country the leaders/representatives cannot be relied upon. We studied democracy again about 2 weeks ago . Thanks, I hope this helps!
