In any situation, prioritize: decide which things are most important and do them first. It often does not matter what you do next, as long as it is something that must be done. My Father, an Army dentist, taught me what he was taught about triage after a nuclear war: separate all the wounded into three groups, the ones who will stay alive no matter how little help you give them, the ones who will die no matter how much help you--right then--can give them, and the ones you can make a difference with with what you have to help them with--right then. Ignore the first two groups (let the second group die); give all your help and attention to the last group. I triaged an "impossible" spelling test: two days to learn 30 words. I divided all the words into 3 groups: the ones I already knew how to spell or just needed to brush up on, the "impossible" ones I had no chance of learning in the time that I had, and the ones I had a chance of learning. I spent almost all my time on the last group. I was amazed at how much I was able to achieve. I was not only able to master the first and last groups; I was able to make a solid effort on all the "impossible" words, and went into the exam with a high degree of confidence. Without triage I might well have not even tried to learn that huge, "impossible" list. Going to school that morning, the floor of the school bus was slick with fear. Perhaps their Fathers had not taught them triage. With my Father in the Army, I attended 13 different schools before I got out of high school; different grades in different schools differ wildly in degree of hardness. There is no "hardest" grade. A hard time in the 6th Grade may well mean a easy time later on, if you have learned how to handle the work, the pressure. I don't know what grade I made on that "impossible" spelling test; it was never returned. I suspect the grades were so horrible they threw it out, but I feel confident I did very well. I hope you do well in the 6th Grade, and in Life. ---Jim
