If it's not infected or it doesn't have a cavity, it just needs to be capped. It will stop the pain and help you keep your tooth for a very long time. Go to the dentist soon, though, you don't want the crack to get any bigger.

If it hurts when you do that, don't do that! I have one central incisor that has had a hairline crack in it for the past 45 years and it has remained unchanged. When I first did it (by hitting the edge of a swimming pool), it was touchy for a few days, but it has not bothered me since.
Now, guessing what YOU may have, it sounds like a cusp tip is fractured and probably being held in place by the filling that was once held in place by your tooth. The usual case here is that you will need to have a crown to restore the tooth. Sometimes, it can be repaired a bit easier with a bonding material, if the missing fragment is not too big.

Certainly book in with your Dentist to have it looked at, an x-ray will tell you all more, then you may have the following options, a bonded filling which is basically a filling with dental adhesive inside it to strengthen the tooth, a pinned filling which does exactly what it says, small pins are inserted (painless) in the tooth and a filling placed on top, or a crown which will hold everything together. There is no immediate reason that you will loose the tooth unless you leave it untreated.

I also have a hairline crack in my tooth, very senitive for a while but it was due to wear and tear. Dentist said he could pull it or I could try using 'Sensodyne Toothpaste'. I now use this and all is well but get it checked anyway. Ps. Dentist also said don't use any whitening toothpastes as they contain abrasives which can cause sensitivity, even Sensodyne Whiteneing.

You should visit your dentist before you lose your tooth.
Cracks cause infiltration and will reach the nerve, best
to visit soon.
