why is it ok for heavy people to say "Oh my god your so skinny" or for someone to casually say "youve put on weight" when you weigh 112 pounds. Now, why cant we tell someone whos bigger "man your fat!!!" or "are you STILL gaining weight?" Please someone tell me why is it ok one way but taboo the other way???

OH BOY!!!! Once again people dont understand the question READ IN FULL AND UNDERSTAND BEFORE RESPONDING!!!! I do NOT want to insult heavyier people beacuse I am "picked" on. I am asking why is it OK for a bigger person to comment about smaller people but the reverse is a no no! whats good for one should be good for the other right? If a bigger person would have their feelings hurt if someone commented on the weight than they should keep their comments to themselves about "skinny" people to themselves.

It is kind of a funny double standard though, at least in the US of A, where bigger is becoming more the norm. As a "skinny" person, I don't appreciate comments about my weight, but I try not to get offended because I know that there are plenty of people who would be happy to have my metabolism. And while I would like to gain a few pounds, I can't say that I would want to be someone you'd call "fat." Guess you just have to be OK with whatever you look like and not take offense on either side.

I guess because is offensive for heavy people, they have enough dealing with their weight and to tell them they're fat would make them fill worst. I know some skinny people are also trying to put some wait but is always better to be skinny than fat. Actually some people really appreaciate when they are called "Skinny" i don't know anybody that would like to be called "Fat"

People from some countries (regardless of their size) do indeed comment on a person's weight gain just as casually as they would about someone's weight loss. In their culture, it apparently isn't considered rude or taboo -- it's just like making an observation or conversation.

I agree with abfabmom- I would never say anything like that to anyone. Just ignore people who say that and get on with life. Besides, why do you want to pick on overweight people just because you've been picked on? Don't you think they've been through enough in life? Just turn the other cheek, and you'll be a better person for it.

the only reason is because there are two ways you can say it. If you say "ARE U STILL GAINING WEIGHT?" its more "mean" and it hurts the persons feelings. If you say " are u gaining a little weight?" it feels more calm and stuff.. its just how we interpret what a person says.

It's NOT okay to say stuff like that!
I would never say ANYTHING like that to ANYONE I know, regardless of how much they weigh.
For the record, Miss Manners agrees with me. It is unquestionably rude to discuss anyone's weight, unless and until they bring it up with you, specifically.
Feel free to respond with something like, "Oh my God, you're so rude!", or, "Man, you've been gaining stupid recently, haven't you?". Alternately, you could just stop and stare at them without saying anything, until they get the hint.

similar double standard applies to smoking
people stand and flap their arms about if a smoker lights up etc.
would they shout at a fat person to put down that chocolate desert in a restaurant

Because it is acceptable--no coveted-- to be skinny in our culture, while being overweight is frowned on and causes many people to be ridiculed, depressed, etc. It is hurtful to point out someone's faults, and if you know someone skinny wanted to be heavier, you shouldn't comment on that either.

i dont know good question. maybe because people are proud to lose weight and outcasts if they are heavy, or gainng weight. ANd people take it as a put down as to where losing weight is a compliment

I agree with you I hate fat people with everything in me. I hate them so much even you would probably call me an asshole. I hate everything about them. They represent everything thats bad in America. They should make it illegal to make clothes for fat people so they would have to suffer the embarresment of showing their fat *** to the public.
