I've always known it to be impolite, just wondering the reason besides bad manners to wear a cap. My nephew (12 yrs old), had a cap on, my dad took it off his head. I was a little surprised my sister didn't ask her son to take it off, I would've asked my son to do so. Is it out of respect to the resaurant owner and those around you?

I can't give you the ancient historical reason, but...

It is just simple manners: A man (or boy) should not wear any headwear inside unless that headwear is for safety or part of a uniform...

I wear several hats... navy ballcaps, and two fedoras, and I ALWAYS take them off when I enter a building.... even in my neighborhood bar.

In fact, the owner of the bar has made it a rule that men are not allowed to wear hats inside the bar... it will cost you a round of drinks.

And it's a delight to tip my hat to the ladies... the retired gals giggle and smile. The kids smile and giggle.

It is polite to remove a cap or a hat inside, even women are supposed to remove a baseball style hat during the national anthem.
It is nice to teach kids good manners, they will need them someday. In this case, it shows respect to all the ladies, older gentlemen, the servers and managers and owners.
It is also respectful to the kid's mother! Maybe it should have been Dad to show the kid proper manners, how to treat a lady, even if it's your Mom! Maybe with Dad as instructor, and hopefully role model, the lesson will be retained, and used, for life!
I wish people would not feel like we need to change with the times, and forget basic manners. Even today, I hear coworkers, ansd see it here, that they wish someone had taught them better manners. It is the way to get and keep a job! It is a way to meet, and keep, a boyfriend or girlfriend. In Corporate America, in certain social situations, it is know and use manners, or be excluded. Watch the show Ugly Betty, the character has not been taught manners, and see the trouble she has! She was not let into a restaurant because of her manners (and looks). No, that is not right, and the moral of the story is one does not need to be beautiful, or have fancy manners to be successful. But it does help to have manners.

It is impolite to wear a hat in a restaurant. It shows a lack of respect to those you are with and any female patrons.
Remember 60 years ago when just about all men wore hats, you tipped you hat when passing ladies. This was out of respect.

as far as etiquette goes, a person never eats with a hat on. People should not wear sunglasses at the table either as they were meant for the outdoors only. A brewing company? Sounds like a sports bar...there men do what they do and don't give a care. Etiquette was meant for the high social class. Sports is not that.

Wearing a hat inside is just not done...why do you need a hat inside? People have just forgotten to teach their children manners.

It's just an old manners/rule thing. My dad was the same thing. Time for people to get with the times.
