Does the bible encourage cannibalism?

Lev 26:29 And ye shall eat the flesh of your sons, and the flesh of your daughters shall ye eat.

"And thou shalt eat the fruit of thine own body, the flesh of thy sons and of thy daughters, which the LORD they God hath given thee, in the siege, and in the straightness, wherewith thine enemies shall distress thee:" (Deuteronomy 28:53)

"And toward her young one that cometh out from between her feet, and toward her children which she shall bear: for she shall eat them for want of all things secretly in the siege and straitness, wherewith thine enemy shall distress thee in thy gates." (Deuteronomy 28:57)

Here we have the horrific calling for cannibalism. It comes even more barbaric considering it calls for the devouring of their own sons and daughters.

Hardly anyone today accepts cannibalism, yet many fundamentalist Christians would have us believe that cannibalism or some other depravity will result if we choose not to believe in God or to choose another god.

He's not encouraging cannibalism, Hes saying that things are going to go horribly wrong if they turn away from Him. (pretty much like you say the "fundamentalist Christians would have us believe") And in fact if you look at History Josephus records an instance in the fall of Israel when the people were starving and a woman was roasting her own child. So looks like God knew what He was talking about.

Why don't you research the context and read the passages before the scripture so you don't appear so ignorant.

Passages 27-35 are talking about the wrath of GOD. The message bible puts it like this ....."And if this—even this!—doesn't work and you still won't listen, still defy me, I'll have had enough and in hot anger will defy you, punishing you for your sins seven times over: FAMINE WILL BE SO SEVERE that you'll end up cooking and eating your sons and your daughters .

Read it in context. It's not asking people to be cannibals - it's saying what would happen in the future: times would be so terrible that even something so horrific would be contemplated.

The reason is because as long as the people followed God he could protect them, but if they chose to turn away from him and reject his protection they would be on their own. Captivity and other consequences would be the result.

Occasionally God forces us to eat other people - often it's our children or other family members.

Leviticus 26:16
I also will do this unto you... You shall sow your seed in vain, for your enemies shall eat it.

Leviticus 26:29
And ye shall eat the flesh of your sons, and the flesh of your daughters shall ye eat.

Deuteronomy 28:53
And thou shalt eat the fruit of thine own body, the flesh of thy sons and of thy daughters.

Deuteronomy 28:57
And toward her young one that cometh out from between her feet, and toward her children which she shall bear: for she shall eat them.

Isaiah 9:19-20
Through the wrath of the LORD of hosts is the land darkened, and the people shall be as the fuel of the fire: no man shall spare his brother. And he shall snatch on the right hand, and be hungry; and he shall eat on the left hand, and they shall not be satisfied: they shall eat every man the flesh of his own arm.

Isaiah 49:26
And I will feed them that oppress thee with their own flesh; and they shall be drunken with their own blood, as with sweet wine.

Jeremiah 19:9
And I will cause them to eat the flesh of their sons and the flesh of their daughters, and they shall eat every one the flesh of his friend.

Ezekiel 5:10
Therefore the fathers shall eat the sons in the midst of thee, and the sons shall eat their fathers.

Zechariah 11:9 I will not feed you: that that dieth, let it die; and that that is to be cut off, let it be cut off; and let the rest eat every one the flesh of another.

The quotes you are giving is warning the Jewish nation of what will happen if they continue to disregard the laws of their Jewish Faith. Not that the Lord will make this happen but, because of their actions this will happen.

No! There's probably a story behind those passages or symbolism or something.
