Do not leave him alone with the cat. If possible, put the cat in a seperate part of the house. When you have the chance, bring them together, with you in the room. If your child does the same thing again, immediately stop him, put the cat in another area and tell him he is not allowed to hurt the cat. Do this once or twice a day for a span of time. If things get better, then let kitty rome again, removing the cat if the child does anything to hurt it. Your child is young and it is unlikely he wants to hurt the cat, but simply needs to learn the way to handle it. If at any time you still feel the child is still mistreating the cat you may want to consider talking with your peditrician (just to get some reassurance) and looking for a new home for the kitty. Some children simply do not do well with animals until they are older.

At 2 years of age kids have no concept of right and wrong so don't go crazy thinking he's actually strangling the cat to kill it. He knows what you want him to do and will aim to please when you are watching, but the need to explore and experiment still is there. At this age the child is still discovering and exploring the world around him by his senses ; touch, taste, sounds, feel sights... these are interesting things to explore.

I am of the mind to let the cat defend himself... if the cat's not interested in being tortured it will make itself scarce and/or will let the kid know by scratching. If the cat is one of those very patient, non-aggressive or de-clawed types, I would suggest you keep an eye on them and make sure the cat's safe...

Good luck!

At 2 years old, He must have seen you and your Partner.
Or he has seen somebody. That is the only way he would know
anything about that at 2 years old. At 2 years old in a week or so
he will forget about it. Just watch what you do in front of him, Baby setter and frinds too. The bigger deal you make of it the more he will do things like that!
Bill,

my son does the same thing to our cat hopefully you have an understanding cat like we do.
Id just watch him and teach him to "make nice" with kitty. I do that with our son and also with his stffed animals to show him the proper way to pet a cat. I hop this helps

Keep them separated if possible..he is little. When they are together, show him how to pet the kitty "nice" holding your hand over his to demonstrate. he will understand nice. Every time you see him hurt kitty, gently, hand over hand pet the kitty nice, eventually he will get the hang of it.
