My baby is 2 months old,

When your infant is startled or feels like she is falling she throws her arms out to the side. This is the Moro Reflex,.
When my daughter does it it scares me and doesnt seem normal.
She will be lying on the bed, changetable or bassinette and she looks like her arms are involuntary pinned for about 5 seconds, vibrating with a look of absolute terror. When they relax she starts to cry.

When I asked and my pediatrician called me back, he already had it in his head what it was from the description passed on by the nurse and I dont think he was even listening to me.

It just doesnt look normal to me, in this video the Moro reflex lasts only for a second, not 5 seconds and the infants doesnt appear to have her arms pinned involuntarily down.
My baby seems unaffected before and after... should I get a second opinion or wait another month when she reaches 3 months and is supposed to grow out of it?

Has anyone else ever experienced anything like this?

My kids did this, but I don't think they were still doing at 2 months. And like the other posters, I only noticed it lasting a second or two, and arms were always out in the "catch myself" posture.
Maybe a little trip to a pediatric neurologist wouldn't be time wasted, mama. It can't hurt, and it may put your mind at ease.

All babies have the startle reflex and it does look disturbing to a new parent (my husband thought it looked like a Red Hot Chili Peppers video).

Her nervous system is immature and the reflex only lasts for a little while. She will grow out of it soon. If she can tolerate it, swaddle her (the burrito wrap) in some receiving blankets for sleeping (it makes them feel secure).

Don't stress! Just enjoy this time!

Yes, I have seen this many times before. Your child is very young and this happens a lot in small children. I wouldn't worry much about it.
If your child seems to be in pain because of the moro then I would contact a different peditritian and ask for advice. Also, you may want to try talking to another mother with a lot of experiance dealing with small children. Good luck!

as a mother of 4 little ones I know how scary that reflex is. My children all did that and my youngest now 3 months old still does it. It is normal. But if you feel nervous get a second opinion. Better to be safe.

I know this is a little off topic of what you are discussing... but my cousins daughter ever since she was born basically would always bend her arms to a 90 degree angle, scrunch her fists up and shake for like five seconds and give a look like she was p.o'ed (basically like how you would imagine a five year old gets when they dont get their way...) ... but shes been doing it since birth... and now she is one and a half and STILL does it. It's the weirdest thing. She will just do it out of the blue at random moments.

I would get a second opinion if I were you. It may be nothing, but its always good to know.

No, that's very weird. I have never heard of that, my son just does it for a second, and never appears pinned down. If the doctor wasn't listening I would suggest a second opinion, and even suggest you switch doctors, you said he was listening, maybe you miss typed. Either way a doctor who does not seem concerned should be replaced immediately!

If she doesn't seem unaffected, I wouldn't worry about it. I think the fear of falling is one of the only fears children are born with. They develop fears as they grow b/c of experiences or people around them.

My kid did the same thing, he is almost 2 now. Its just part of who they are, I think your baby is fine, but maybe get a second opinion.

If it's going to help you feel better, get a second opinion.
I think that your little girl is fine though, but it never hurts to get another opinion.
