To southern Apos - 1stly believing in Islam includes believe in Jesus (peace be upon him) because was was a prophet like Prophet Muhammed (peace be upon him). We believe in the same God - One and Only - Allah who created us and the world.
Islam is not a new religion - the first Muslim was prophet Adam (pbuh). This is because Islam comes from the 2 roots. One which means peace and the other submission. So it basically means peace achieved by submitting oneself to Almighty God. A Muslim is one who Believes in Allah and His messengers.
Messengers were sent to specific groups of people to guide them but Prophet Muhammed was sent to all of humanity and he was given the final word of God to unite mankind and to confirm the messages brought by the previous prophets (peace be upon them).
To Traver - those things are false. Islam gives utmost importance to parents. You are to give them utmost respect and treat them with kindness and obey their wishes except when they ask you to worship anyone other than Allah.

I am worried that my family might say something bad about Mohammed and that I would be required to kill them. Or if another Muslim said that the Koran is lies, I am worried that I would be required to kill him. Are these things true?

I don't know about changing religion, but I'll tell you one thing. No matter what religion you are, God is one (not referring to Christian, Muslim or other, just God)
