I am looking to add 3 BR and 2 Baths (currently it's typical cape with 2 BR's). I also want to remodel the kitchen with new cabinets and flooring, and take down a wall to make the kitchen bigger. I'm trying to see if anyone has done a similar project and about how much it would cost. THe upstaris is about 750 sq ft and the first floor is about 800. Any help would be appreciated.

Always remember that remodeling is much more expensive than building a new equal amount of space. We do it because we love our homes....i just did this to an old country small farmhouse which needed all new everything...new wiring, new plumbing, new bathrooms, kitchen cabinets, etc...I purposely did not knock out any walls.....just made 2 bedrooms out of old master big one.....house is exactly 2000 sq. ft. and spent 75.00 a ft doing it...I live in rural Texas so you do the math where you live as far as contruction ...I also did not add on any room but a utility room on slab....the house is on pier and beams...

Better homes and gardens has a software package that will help you to design the remodel. It will cost less than 100 to purchase. I'm not sure if it will tell you how much the project will cost but once you have your design together for the project, you can take it to a builder and let them give you an estimate based on your design. If you decide to make changes then of course you will have to get an updated quote.

Think not only about your costs as you remodel, think about making decisions that will make you happy long-term (don't cheap out on those things that really matter; don't over-spend on items that don't). Also consider environmental choices. A good book is "Good Green Homes" by Jennifer Roberts. You'll find little things you can do to make your house more comfortable to live in, saving energy and not trashing the planet more than you "need" to.

Hot air rises. IMO 2 story houses should have 2 systems as they never work right with just 1 system. The thermostat regulates the temperature, and it's most likely located down stairs. It could be a series of problems. Not enough return air being drawn from upstairs, uneven air balance, ect. Your best bet is to call the people who installed it and tell them what's going on and have them fix it.

as far as the carpet, tile, vinyl, the avg cost for carpet is about 8-12 dollars a square yard. Vinyl would run about 5-9square yard.
the company I work for www.carpetuniverse.com ships nationwide and you can also research the cost of installation in Ma, by clicking on the special services Button and enter your zip code. Hope this helps ya good luck

Are you planning on adding on for the 3bed/2bath or trying to carve them out of the existing space? If yes, how big a footprint are you thinking about adding?
