Hey, you're lying there flat on your back, helpless, with a tray over your chest so you can't sit up...a claustrophobic position for many...and then the whir of the drill, the suction thing stuck in your mouth drying you up, and that "lovely" mirror showing you all that's going on! When they come in with the syringes and the drill, from that angle you really feel threatened! Not to mention the pain! I have a v. high pain threshold but a lot of people suffer. Shades of the Clockwork Orange! I find it helps to shut my eyes and not talk to the dentist at all, ignore his chatter and try to relax.

People are afraid of the dentist because of the smell and they walk in the operatory and all they see is all these scary instruments. Premedicating is good for someone who hyperventilates or passes out before or during a procedure. A good dental assistant should see your fear and do all she can to prevent it from getting out of control.

I hate the dentists, I always feel queasy. The last time I visited before having the actual procedure I told the dentist I was very nervous but despite this he kept me for ages describing the whole procedure in every detail (yes I realise this his job but I just wanted to sign and run), then when I turned white he started to panic and shut the door so no one in the corridor could see me pass out!!!! I managed to contain myself and got out of there without passing out, but this is my biggest worry whenever I visit the anxiety just overwhelms me.

As for the actual procedure of having a tooth removed I had a shot of Valium in the arm and it was over in no time.... I actually breezed through it.

I have 3 reasons:
1. Most of my teeth's enamel was destroyed when I had to take a bronchitis medicine when I was 3, so my teeth will be yellow until I'm about 18
2. My teeth were born at many uneven angles, so I had to get braces and headgear for them
3. I have a dead tooth that I had to get a root canal for(long story)

It used to be. Dentists used to be butchers! Find a good one and you've got no worries. Pain at the dentist can be consigned to history.

It isn't, unless your parents and people close to you were stupid enough to teach you that dentists are scary, when very young.

It's the same with spiders - a mother scared of spiders passes on her fear to her children.

I personally am petrified, for me its because everything that touches my teeth that is metal sends shivers down my spine and dentists always use metal instruments!!

Plus its because i cant see what they are doing that scares me

Oh and that smell...................
