I especially want to know about how libraries worked at that time. I'm writing a story during that time, and I need as much info as I can get.

That would be the late 1700s, and libraries as we know them today did not exist. Universities and wealthy, private individuals held the largest collections of books, writings, and journals, both in Europe and America. Maybe a web search on oldest university libraries would yield some info.

I'd do a little research on Ben Franklin. He was the one that "invented" what we now know as the library. Also, the Boston Public Library was the country's first municipally supported library ( http://www.bpl.org/guides/buildings.htm ), the first to lend a book, etc. and it was established in the 1850s.

Also this link is from a search I did on ALA.org http://google.ala.org/search?q=oldest%20library&client=default_frontend&output=xml_no_dtd&proxystylesheet=default_frontend It had a few good lookin' links that may help.
Good luck

Read a little about Benjamin Franklin as he established the first public library in the US.

Well, a good place to start would be the Goncourt Brothers. Also, Napoleon wrote a novel before he became what he became. The memoirs of Madame de Staehle would also help. Don't underrate the net. Expand your search techniques.
