There is a big debate going on in Britain at the moment about the niqab.
They say that it is unbritish and causes resent and hatred towards Muslims because it shows they don't want to integrate...and it is a big problem..

But how many veiled women are actually in Britain. Have these people that are making the comments actually EVER seen a veiled women in REAL LIFE?????

Why is what a handful of women wear such a big issue?????

Un-British? Depends upon what people mean by British. If being British means cherishing every individual's liberty to choose and practice his or her own religion freely, then it is not un-British.

Last time I saw a veiled woman? A couple days ago at a restaurant. She walked by my table, and, miraculously enough, I didn't suffer a stroke, heart-attack, or mental breakdown. In truth, I'd have to say it had no ill effect upon me at all. The lady wearing bright orange in the next booth put a hurt on my eyes, though. That was painful to look upon. Perhaps we should ban orange.

Is Niqab the same thing as Hijab? I live in Melbourne and I see ladies wearing this all the time. I can't imagine why anyone has a problem with it.

Not so long ago all the women in England used to wear headscarves constantly. Noone objected to it although it was sometimes mocked at by satirical writers.

I can also remember when it was considered awful and shocking to have any part of your underwear visible in public. Nowadays, many women have their bra straps sticking right out or clearly visible through transparent tops (although I must say I have never seen a woman who was identifiably Muslim dressed like this).

The issue is not how many people wear it but that it is nobody else's business what they wear. I personally think it looks incredibly tacky to wear an off the shoulder top with bra straps poking out, and also that tight pants with a short top look really atrocious on anyone overweight. However I keep these opinions to myself when looking at someone who dresses this way.

BTW thanks Jaber your answer was very interesting and informative. We all need to know a bit about each others' religions so that we don't inadvertently offend. If I were visiting a Muslim country I would wear a headscarf and if it was a country where the burka was generally worn I would wear that too.

Hijab is not merely a covering dress but more importantly, it is behavior, manners, speech and appearance in public. Dress is only one facet of the total being. The basic requirement of the Muslim woman's dress apply to the Muslim man's clothing with the difference being mainly in degree. Modesty requires that the area between the navel and the knee be covered in front of all people except the wife. The clothing of men should not be like the dress of women, nor should it be tight or provocative. A Muslim should dress to show his identity as a Muslim. Men are not allowed to wear gold or silk. However, both are allowed for women.
For both men and women, clothing requirements are not meant to be a restriction but rather a way in which society will function in a proper, Islamic manner.

are you kidding?!! I agree there are places where you may never see a woman in niqab but equally there are places (and increasingly more) where you would feel uncomfortable if you were not in one yourself. One of the problems is that families who choose to wear a niqab tend to live very closely with other similar families which is not at all suprising, but doesnt assist with the whole integration and we are all british together argument.

In answer to your last question here, why is what a handful of women wear such a big issue?????? well, you certainly seem intelligent enough to know exactly why and it makes me wonder if you are simply trying to inflame an already difficult situation rather than seeking other people's thought and feelings on the matter.

Sorry if that sounds like a dig but I wanted to answer you as best I could.

Since Jack Straw made his comments more women have chosen to wear them. In this country we are not allowed into a lot of shops or garages with a hood up, it doesn't cover most of the face so why are these women allowed to wear niqab's anywhere they want and by choice I might add it's not a religious requirement. And what are they hiding? So can anyone decide to wear one as and when they want, even terrorists?

It has been estimated that there are about 1,000 Muslim women wearing the niqab. I think it is very British to wear it, it shows the freedom to chose in a multi cultural society. Yes I have seen several but not recently.

It is not a big issue, what Jackass Straw has said is an issue as it shows a complete and utter lack of understanding about Freedom of expression and for a parliamentarian that is disgraceful, he should be made to retire/sacked (preferably without pension).

Mav know lots women that are Muslim.

Mav have no issue with the ladies wearing the veil. It's not about integration, it's a matter of religious freedom - they have it.

Mav wonder, would Mav look pretty in veil. Mav think women in veil are pretty

Answer of the first question:
I saw a girl/woman(can't really tell because of obvious reasons) this morning in the local shop.
I think women in UK should not wear veils because they have chosen to live in a civilised country and they have to live by its rules.
Same for European women when in Muslim countries- they have to cover their faces.
