You never know... Get a good lawyer. If you get turned down once, keep trying.

You might be able to qualify for disability after three or four years of multiple hearings and aggravation and after hiring a lawyer. Why don't you just have knee replacements and put your chronic pain behind you? 56 is too young to plan on a life time of intense pain in order to qualify for disability. Get your knee joints replaced and go back to work and make some good money for another ten years. I have a close relative your age who had both knees done recently and their only thought is why did they wait so long to have the surgery. After the second surgery they were able to return to work part time after less than a month with very little pain.

Disability will be a pain to get and also a pain to keep if you have a work history like yours since there are so many medical related jobs that you could easily do while sitting down and off your feet while answering the phone in some medical office. You don't have to be able to perform a job making the same kind of money as your previous job, just able to perform any type employment whatsoever to not be able to qualify for disability. For a person with a correctable disability and tons of high paying job experience you would have a high hurdle to jump to get and then keep disability. Sorry if this is not the answer you wanted to hear. good luck

If you have worked in a hospital for 33 yrs you should know what options are available to you.
If you have worked in the same hospital for that 33yrs you are probably vested in a retirement plan and can retire from that hospital.
You could have total knees done on both knees.
Ours is now becoming a society of taking the easier and softer
way. Before taking the easier/softer way, work on your alternative options and leave the disability benefits to those who may not even have knees.

Most likely it will be a yes. Have you contacted your state's disability office & started the paperwork yet? Have your doctor fill out the papers & sign a disability form. Also check with the Social Security Office & get your paperwork going there. Mine took 5 years to get accepted, but that is because I had an injury that they were waiting to see if it would heal. When it did not, they sent me to a review board of doctors that approved my claim. I now receive a combination payment of State Disability & Federal funds for SSDI payments that are from physical disability & not mental, like the SSI payments are.

You might qualify for disability if your knees are bad enough, but you probably will not be able to claim it as work related. If you are applying for SSI disability you must apply more than once. They always reject everyone the first time. Many individuals end up having to hire an attorney before their claim is accepted. They will probably try to get you placed in a light duty area first.

You should get in touch with a social security disabilty lawyer. The system can be really tricky and even though it may cost you some money now, it will save you a lot of time and stress in the long run.

Last year my knees were so bad with RA that I could hardly walk. 9 days on prednizone and they cleared completely of course now it is my wrists and thumb joints.

I take 2 Excedrin and 2 ibuprofen every 4 hours and stay in quite good shape. Hydrocodone on my worst days.

Good Luck, I certainly sympathize.

Good god, I would hope so. do you mean you worked in ICU for 33 yrs? SSD will try to use that against you--"with your education & work experience..." Most people get turned down the 1st time--keep trying, get a layer if you have to--watch the time line on your re-submits.
Luck to you.
