It did and does evolve. Though I do believe certain aspects of religion were created in order to control the general public. Rome is a good example, as is the Roman Catholic Church after the fall of Rome. Basic religious ideas evolve with the people and with the mix of other cultures.

Religion definitely was created in the minds of men. Religion was a way of trying to identify this God that they knew existed but denied the one who was. When Moses asked who he should say who sent him to free the Hebrew children from their captives, God said, " I AM THAT I AM: and he said, Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel, I AM hath sent me unto you." By the way, that is the name of God. A name was to speak of something of a persons character and the character of God is that "he is" and there is no other God.
On another related note. Since atheists insist on evolution and that religion is the product of ignorant men, (Of which I agree but not ignorance of a belief in God but rather an ignorance of who God is) and coupling that thought with the supposed "evolution process" of gaining in intelligence, at what level of intelligence did man first conceive of the existence of a God? It would appear to me that gaining knowledge would lead to the intelligence of acknowledging there is a God and not the other way around. (Evolutionarily speaking of course.) So from that view of "evolution", men have regressed rather then having progressed.

I'll go along with that since man invented many gods and even more religions.

I think religion evolves.
We've gone through many stages—animism, multiple gods, etc.— in reaching our current level of monotheism. I think we will progress through many more stages of spiritual development and understanding.
