The mom could have laid on it. If the puppy was sick the mom may have seperated it from the other pups and let it die. But you said they had a vet check so I think that the mom laid on them. Or you could get an autopsy.

Oh sweetie, I am so sorry. I just lost a puppy in my litter (pups are now 3 1/2 weeks old, little one died @ 5 days).
As everyone has stated, there are many reasons a puppy can die quickly. The reason mine went was something called 'fading puppy syndrome', or failure to thrive. After having the dew claws removed @ the vet that day, she was too stressed & stopped nursing... she also was no longer able to regulate her temperature & stopped developing & gaining weight. Within 18 hours I had lost her.
The litter I had 2 years ago, it is amazing I didn't lose any puppies, if I didn't live in the kitchen with Chablis to save every puppy for the first 2 weeks, I think they all would have been stepped on or rolled on! This time, I bred Penny & she is a perfect first-time mom, so careful.
My breeder has also told me that there is no formula for bitches to be good or bad. A wonderful mom the first litter bit the head off a 2 day old puppy her 2nd litter!
The best thing you can do is to make sure your whelping box is set up properly with puppy-rails on the sides so that they cannot be smooshed between the mom & the walls. Also, make sure the box is not so big that she can lay easily in the middle of it & lay on pups as they get along her backside.
Also, make sure you are keeping records of your puppies daily. You should be taking their weight each day by ounces to ensure that everyone is gaining weight (not that they will all be the same size, but if 5 puppies gain 3 ounces & 1 puppy gains barely 1 ounce, you might have to take extra care to give that puppy the teat)
Watch them in the box with the mom, make sure they are all nursing strongly & for equal amounts of time... don't fret too much about who gets the 'best teat' because if you force puppies to a specific teat they may stress & not nurse, which is a worse problem.
If you don't already, make sure there is an adequate heating supply, either a heat lamp, puppy-approved heating pad or equivalent. Snuggling up to mom or making a puppy-pile is not enough. My box is right next to the heat register & we keep the house @ 73, so when the heat kicks in, one side of the box gets nice & warm, & the puppies can move there as needed.
Finally, make sure that mom is doing well & not getting stressed herself... if this is a larger or more active litter than last time, she may be having a hard time moving in the box without puppies getting in her way, so try to make accomodations for her.
Good luck with the litter, & may all your puppies be happy healthy & well-homed!!

If your vet checked the Mom & pups yesterday and they were all healthy I'd bet you and the vet are right. It's sad but part of being a breeder. Put them in your bedroom where you can hear if she sits or lays on a puppy. Sorry for your loss.
As for the "answer" that included "i hope ur dog gets cancer" and then brags about working for a humane society or whatever...he must have loved his job of murdering the dogs!

It is so common that it has a name..'pancake disease'
the breed I raise would smash all of their puppies if i wasn't there 24/7 to watch out for them until they are about 2 weeks old, and can get out of the way or cry loudly..
I sleep with my arms across he litter,,really, so i will wake up each time mom moves, to make sure she isn't on a puppy..

This puppy could have been born with a congenital or hereditary disorder that would not be picked up on a normal vet check. Possibilities include a heart malfunction, or some abnormality. I would not be too quick to blame the vet, as it could have been a puppy with an underlying problem. So sorry you have had to deal with losing the puppy.

I am so sorry for your loss. I to would think the mother accidently laid on it but who would really know.I am in shock that someone would say ( I hope your dog gets cancer) That is sick and not funny AT ALL!! I had two Dobies that died from Osteosarcoma(cancer)and it is really sad. Maybe this person's thinking is why she no longer works at the SPCA!! Thank God she doesn't. Enough!!! Good luck with your dog and the rest of the litter.

some possible things
the mom dog smothered her by accident
the pup had a condition that was not known,
or the pup ate something that was bad for it
[chocolate is deadly for animals] or found some cleaning chemical and licked it
one will never know what really happened and i am sorry it happened it is really sad ......
as for your comment about people saying spay her, i agree with you. spca wants to spay all animals and that is cruel and unfair....i do not spay any of my pets and will never ever do that....

The only way that you can find out for sure is to have a autopsy done. The vet can tell you what killed the puppy, whether it was suffocation or not.

Either she laid on it, which happens a lot.... or the puppy got too cold for some reason. Cold is the #1 killer of pups.
