While I am neither a big fan nor a rabid hater of Bose I can offer some observations from 25 years in retail audio.
1. Bose discourages retailers from offering direct comparisons between Bose and any other speakers. When I worked for a highly respected regional retailer, Bose reps came in and set up a separate display for just Bose speakers rather than have them wired into our main display switching system. This prevented us from switching directly from any other speaker brand to Bose during a demo (we also carried JBL, Mission, NHT, Ohm, DA, Advent, Infinity, Jamo, etc.).
2. Bose had the best spiff program for salespeople, by far. I used to win 10-12 pairs of Bose speakers per year and I would sell them all privately. I typically made $4000-$5000 per year from these. No other manufacturer came close to these spiff amounts. I did use one set for a few months before selling them, but I was unimpressed, especially considering the retail price.
3. Stop 10 people on the street at random and ask each to name the 5 best speaker manufacturers. Most won't even be able to name more than 2 or 3 manufacturers. Now ask the same of 10 people that are "into" home audio and most will easily rattle off the names of 5 or more manufacturers, but very few, if any, will pick Bose as one of the BEST. To me this demonstrates that Bose is marketing to the less knowledgable buyer, and there is no doubt that their marketing is superb.

Its simple for me for 2 reasons.
1. Listened to a system that cost half as much as sounded 10 times better. (mirage)
2. Had to help a friend expand his bose lifestyle system into a whole house audio system that could do basic control of external audio equipment like an ipod and a sirius radio. Needless to say the bose keep getting in the way. I wanted to chuck it out the window but he would not let me.

All it takes is one listen to hear what an inferior product it is. The speakers sound tinny and small and it is way overpriced. The fact that they also act like scientologists whenever anyone criticizes their product is also a factor in my hatred towards them. If they can't handle criticism of their product, then they should just sell their product via mail order so it can't be compared side to side with other products at a retail outlet (not that you can anyways, since they have contracts that state that no competitor can be placed within a certain footage of a bose product).

inferior performance reguarding price. Most Bose speakers are easily outperformed by products that cost less. The acoustimass series, for example, has a strong deficiency in the midrange.
However, I don't mind the companion 3 computer speakers. I own a set.

General Questions 1. Do you like Tool, dislike Tool, or indifferent? - Love Tool, my favourite band 2. What first drew you to Tool? Or, what makes you cover up your ears and sing "lalalalalala" when you hear Tool? - Liking their music 3. How do you like your Tool? Angrier (Opiate, Undertow), Artsier (Lateralus, 10,000 Days), or both (Ænima) (feel free to disagree with my categorization) - Both 4. Favorite album opener? Any particular reason? - "The Grudge". No, it's just quality. 5. Favorite closing song? Reason? - "Third Eye". No, it's just quality. 6. Favorite title track? Reason? (for this question, consider Ænema the title track for Ænima) - "Lateralus" 7. Videos- like them, hate them? - "Schism" is good. The rest are crap. 8. Any side projects, guest appearances, etc that you like? - Only A Perfect Circle. Adam Jones on the new Isis album should be good though. 9. If you could pick one song for the purposes of introducing someone to Tool, what would it be? - "The Patient" 10. Favorite filler track? (filler, non-sensical, short, whatever you want to call it) - "Eon Blue Apocalypse" 11. Favorite album artwork? (not limited to cover art) - "Aenima" 12. Tool takes their sweet azz time releasing albums. Does this bother you? (4 and a half albums in 17 years) - No. I prefer waiting for a brilliant album rather than picking some songs from a load of bad albums. 13. Grab your crystal ball. Has Tool peaked, or is the best yet to come? - Yes, I don't think they can top what they've already released. I really hope I'm wrong.

way too much mid bass
lacking in mid range
lacking in real bass impact
shrieking highs, not smooth at all
poor quality, how many questions have you seen on here with people wondering how to fix them? (I've seen at least a dozen)
way over priced, all the above would be OK at 1/10th the price

What pushed me over the edge was their refusal to publish any specs.
That, and those ridiculous demos with their long tubes bloating the mid bass and blowing out the candles .....

My father in law had those little cube speakers.
They sounded terrible. He got rid of them and got others.
Bose also won't allow stereo magazines to do comparison tests.
I think they are over priced and over rated.
