...When running most people breathe heavily thru their mouths, when we actually should be breathing thru our noses, but human nature is human nature so the habit probably won't change any time soon..... But, after breathing large volumes of air thru the mouth/throat, and especially when the body is stressed by physical activity, the tissues in the mouth and throat tend to dry out somewhat, and the Cough Control Center at the back of the throat becomes more easily irritated and the coughing spasm occurs because the body is trying to get Alveolic Fluid and/or phlegm to erupt and moisten the tissues in the throat, and soothe the irritation ............. Disgusting picture, but thats about it...

This kind of post exercise coughing is harmless and a sign that you worked out hard...it is a broncho spasm...I get them after a race sometimes, a lot of runners do....as you have found out it is temporary....
