they face the light to absorb the most solar radiation (light). they do this by a process called phototropism, where the plants alters the turgor pressure (thats the water pressure inside a plants cell) on opposite sides of it's self, by lowering the pressure on one side and increasing the pressure on the opposite side the plant will appear to move toward the light. No muscles involved.

u can refer photoperiodism . u can even do this expt . Just place a plant in a black box or a closed room except leave a hole in the box or through the door, water the plants daily and u can observe that the plant try to bend and grows towards sunlight.

1 reason i learned is b/c they grow on the shaded part hence the leaning toward the light.
