Yep - or an abcess.

It sounds like one of two things- 1. A crack in the tooth, which would explain the pain on biting. Try easing up on biting on that side for a few days and see if you can get it to calm down. A cracked tooth often requires a crown to protect it and keep it from cracking all the way down to the root. , or 2. The nerve of the tooth has been injured and you need to eat only soft foods on that tooth for awhile to see if it calms down. If the tooth becomes sensitive to hot temperatures or begins to ache on its own (especially when you lay down at night) then I am afraid you may be headed for a root canal. Try some ibuprofen for a few days and see if you can get it to stop hurting. Either it will eventually get better on its own, or it will get much worse if it's the nerve. If it stays painful just on biting, then you've definitely got a cracked tooth. Good Luck either way.

You have obviously got some kind of infection, but i wouldnt necessarily say it was an abcess.

I got the same thing at the mo. My dentist says there is infection at the root of the tooth and it needs to come out. But its not an abcess and i dont need antibiotics before he does it.

Although the pain is not there all the time, and so i am waiting cos i am a coward........lol

Sounds like an abscess. They always happen on a Friday when the dentist is closed for the weekend! I am sorry for you though as I know that it is absolute agony that you are going through. All I can suggest is that you go to your Doctor and ask for anti-biotics straightaway but even they take 24 hours to kick in.
Good luck.

In the back, it could be a " wisdom tooth " they usually cause havoc and sometime have to be removed even when they are in good shape, check with your dentist is always best.

I ahd a similar problem and went to dentist convinced I was facing root canal treatment, it turned out to be a stray wisdom tooth impacting on it! Not sure which you would consider worse!

Yes, exposed and infected. I hate dentists more than most people but at your stage you have to see one.
