I watch "the dog wisperer" with cesar milan and he keeps stressing that when a dog sits on your lap or climbes over you, he establishes dominence over you.
well, i have a 2 y/o yorkie who always has to climb on my lap in order to curl up and sleep, eithr on my legs or on my lap.
I like it cause he keeps me warm, and i'm sure he likes it too.
should I discourage it though, when he does it next time, so he doesn't think he is alpha?
what do u think?

lol, All the yorkies I am acquainted with KNOW they are dominant. If your yorkie is having behavior problems, then I suppose you could ask it not to sit in your lap, but honestly, is it that terrible if the dog thinks its in control? You know your dog better than anyone else and you are able to tell if the dog is establishing dominance or just trying to spend some time with you. I suggest you act according to your own observations.

It doesn't sound as though your dog is out-of-control excited or trying to act dominant when he does that. He probably just knows he's a lap dog and that you have a warm lap--just like my cats. One good way to tell how "dominant" he sees the act is to put him down. Does he snarl or act in any other way that looks like he thinks you're challenging him? If not, it sounds like he just wants some love.

My roommate has a 178lb St. Bernard who thinks he is a lap dog!!! Holy cow! Now with him I have to discourage it or I'd be squashed like a peanut, but I think your little Yorkie just likes sleeping in your lap. I doubt he is having dreams of dominating you! : )

That show is about training or resolving problems - right? I can see it being a problem when you're trying to establish who Alpha is but he's a little guy and not as big of a problem as my 124 lb dog.
If he's knows you are the "big dog" it should not be a problem - besides toys were bred as companions. I say enjoy him.

depends on everything else going on, if your dog listens to you as far as commands and everything else i think it is fine, it only becomes a problem when your dog does not listen to you at all or if he becomes aggressive when you try to move him or try to do things with him that he doesn't want to. I allow my dog to sit on my lap but he knows if i am to say get down he will get down. I guess i am just trying to say if you feel you don't have control over your dog than don't let him do it anymore, otherwise there is nothing wrong with it.

i honestly dont think your dog is trying to prove alpha ! sounds like he is acting in character for a yorkie- little "lap dogs" .now , if it was my dog - a neo -mastiff who does try and climb up then yep its tring to be alpha .- and winning too :( at 9 months and 108 lbs. if he wants to sit there then sit there he will.

Dog's need the same love they give you. He is like a child and needs the comfort and companionship you give.

dont let your dog just come on your lap, when you want him to lay on you call him over and put him on your lap.

Remember, Cesar only solves problems. If you don't have a problem, you don't need to follow his method. (People will yell at me for that, but I don't care.) Dogs are with us short enough as it is. I say spoil them rotten if they're not causing a problem for you.
