Our local humane shelter, is making people wait to adopt black kittens and cats until after Halloween. This is due to people sacrificing them and such, does this still go on today? And two does all humane shelters follow this rule? I was curious because I thought it was a good thing.

Yes - a lot of shelters do this. I've even had my vet warn me to keep my two black cats in at this time of year. This sort of thing does happen. I have a friend who investigates cult crime such as animal sacrifices. She says that kids and teenagers will seek out black cats to kill in order to freak out neighbors, scare other kids, or because they think it's cool. It's not like it's a real religious thing for these people. It's usually done for shock value or as a scare tactic. Unfortunately I think there will always be creeps out there who do things like this without regard for the animal's life - and definitely without regard to the pet owner's feelings.

Yes, it still goes on. I sadly had to get rid of my fuzzy black kitten around halloween time and they took her and kept her from adoption until after the holiday had passed. I don't know if all humane shelters follow the rule, but the ones in Delaware County, PA do. I think it would be in the best interest of the cat and they are a "humane" shelter and all.

I guess that can still go on in some parts of this country. Our local humane society charges $120 to adopt a cat or dog so I doubt if any sick losers would want to pay that price. The staff and adoption counselors have a high level of education and I don't think anyone could fool them if they had such intentions regarding a cat.

You thought what was a good thing?

Our local animal shelter does the same thing with black cats/kittens around halloween. There are apparently still stupid people who think that sacrificing helpless critters is fun or cool or whatever is going on in their little pea brains.

Yes, I think it's a common practice for animal shelters in general.

Yes, as far as I know ALL shelters do this every year. People also tend to adopt them, use them with their witches costume and then return them to the pound afterwards. Used to be very common practice. Most shelters suggest keeping ANY color cat indoors around halloween time for their safety.

I just checked the website of my local Humane Society and they are actually giving a discount on black and orange cats. Of course, they have an unusual situation going on right now. They will be moving in a week so they are really trying to have a lot of adoptions right now. All of the animal have lower adoption fees this week.
