I had complex le fort 1 maxillary osteotomy and bilateral sagittal split ramus osteotomies of the mandible almost two years ago. I never regained my opening and my left side of my tongue and gums is numb except for some painful feeling. I also do not have any sense of taste on the left side of my mouth. I am not getting many answers from my surgeon.

With this amount of surgery and surgical risk, I am sure that your surgeon discussed these possible outcomes with you. Undoubtedly, you signed an informed consent that they have on file in the office.

If none of this sounds even vaguely familiar, you may have some issues to discuss with someone other than your surgeon.

Because they interupted your nerves numbness is something to be expected. For my daughter who had a lafort osteotomy and basically in laymans terms they split her upper pallet widened it lowered it and moved if forward 4mm. She was numb for a while but when her feeling began to return she was well. She is still slightly numb on her gums above her front teeth and it's been a year now. They do explain that this is a possiblility before surgery. As for not opening your mouth very wide maybe you should have a second opinion. Maybe they could do something else for you.

It sound like you have tightening in you jaw muscle. Speak to your dentist re physio on your tmj. The numbness is most likely due to damage to the nerve in your mandible during surgery. .

Ask another surgeon, sounds like he or she made a mistake and is trying to hide it.
