Sites like Bebo, Friendster and Myspace are currently very popular for personal homepages.
They offer powerful tools that make it simpler to post text, photos, music and now home-grown video and because these sites utilise the new online phenomenon of "social networking" the potential reach of your pages is huge. Conversely it gives you the opportunity to find the homepages of lots of other interesting individuals like yourself!
With regard to your business website, the aforementioned sites may not be suitable for most businesses so I would question whether you really want your businesses online presence to reflect an amateur image to your customers.
From a business perspective you also need to ask yourself how much your time is worth.
Building a website can either be a fulfilling creative process or a frustrating and bewildering time consuming effort due to the often overwhelming amount of tools and information available and the effort required to master the appropriate technologies.
Often free services and WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get) editors can be restrictive and may not necessarily give you the site you need, and mostly this is only discovered after you have already invested a considerable amount of time.
I often find that business owners can end up spending a lot of valuable time researching tools and services in an attempt to build thier own site only to find the fruits of thier labour, in the majority of cases, woefully inadequate to show to potential customers.
My advice is to concentrate on what you are best at, i.e. running your business and find a professional web developer/designer that offers quality and value with a straightforward approach.
Often they manage all aspects of your site's design and delivery including domain registration, hosting, email, search engine placement and even broadband.
You may be surprised at how reasonably priced a professionally designed and coded, standards compliant and search engine friendly website can be!

Buy yourself Microsoft Front Page for web design, then search on 'Florida Gulf Coast University - Microsoft Front Page Tutorial' it's brilliant. You will need to get your web site hosted - I use www.metsite.com because they're a nice bunch of real people. Hosting around £50 per year an extra £15 I think for the Microsoft Extensions if you use Front Page. Essentially a weather site, but they do hosting too. You also get a 'Virtual Control Panel' so you can see who has visited your web site, when, how many pages they looked at and which country the hit originated from.

Do you have a WYSIWIG editor like dreamweaver, namo webeditor or Office FrontPage(SharePoint Designer). You can use that, then upload it to a web server, like freewebs.com
They also offer a web site editor as well.
