Expired fruit juice is put in landfills, not the river, an even bigger waste because the juice is not removed from the containers. The industries unbrought products are the responsibility of the distributers, who donate these products to many charitable organizations, but liability is always an issue. If however, you are asking about the pulp of fruit, it does go to farmers in civilized countries. Rarely is anything legally dumped into Rivers as raw product.

When the expiration date comes close to expiring, most stores will reduce the price of it to sell it, if that is a no winner, then they give it to the needy (food banks, churches, etc). Most reputable juicers will give a credit to the store and take back the product. It will not go to animals NOR will it be dumped in the river. Most likely scenario, it will be mixed with mulch and will end up in your flower beds...As far as dumping it in the river, there are heavy fines associated with polluting rivers, oceans and so on...

I know some out of date food is resold as animal feed, I am not sure about fruit juice. You would need to talk to the manufacturer. They might welcome your suggestion if it is just being poured down the drain.

If they didnt freeze it yet, or it is the portion supposed to be sold as "fresh" and was not consumed, they throw it out. The rules for food is very strict.
