You need to do ankle strengthening exercises, like raising up onto your tiptoes and then flat again.

You may want to take a week or so off from exercise so that your ankles will have a chance to heal. It may help for you to use ankle braces for a while. They need a chance to heal! Then you strengthen them so it doesn't happen again.

The solution would be to get some neuromuscular therapy work done. I am a therapist and find that oftentimes the area that hurts isn't necessary the problem. In other words, there are many muscles that attach via the Achilles tendon. Your calves may be overly flexed, or you may be plantar flexed. You can figure out if you are by laying on your back with your legs strait. If your feet are naturally at a 90 degree angle you are fine. If they point down (imagine like a ballerina) you are plantar flexed. In this case your calves need work. Another option may be that you are developing heel spurs another symptom of needing calf work. You can stretch your calves by leaning forward and pressing your heels into the ground. Unless you are excessively overweight the problem has little to do with your ankles and much more to do with the surrounding muscles. Eventually the problem could be debilitating and could lead to more serious problems. If your heel spurs get bad enough you could need surgery or you could develop shin splints which is the muscle becoming so tight that it begins to detach from the bone.

the only ankle problems I've had is spraining and shin splints. If it was spraining you would have felt serious pain and wouldn't be able to walk on it for awhile. If it's shin splints, go to wikipedia and lookup shin splints to see what's a good remedy (i'm lazy)

New shoes, for better support. Yes, strengthening them is great, but you may also want to see your doctor. I ignored the pain for some time to find out I damaged a tendon in my foot.
