The middle east is rich in oil but if I remember correctly the fertile cresecent is also good for sugar cane and soy beans. The are also know for their stunning historic architecture and cities.
Cities like Alexandria and Jerusulem and things the Pyramids and King Solomon's temple are found in this region, and the sometimes bloody historical conflicts and complicated betrayls that linger in this region might be of some interest to you.

If the combined economies of all the arab countries were counted together & oil was removed from the equation, the result would be approximately equal to the economic output of Denmark, & yes, the main product would be dates.
