If you do both they might have a problem cashing or depositing it if they don't have a joint account yet.

Also, the bride's name is still her maiden name until they get married, & she goes through the time consumming process of changing it.

So I suggest, You make the check out to the ONE you are closer to. If that is the bride use her madian name.

I know it might seem sad that you are writting the check out to one, when a marriage is the celebration of them joining, but it is just easier.

When my stepdaughter got married this year, my husband wrote the check out in Her name...and we noticed that most all of her side of the family did the same...The Grooms side of the family wrote HIS name as the payee...I think this works best because it takes a few days too get everything squared away, bride having too change her last name and etc..so at least this way, they can get the checks cashed with no hassle...

I got married last year and a lot of people put both of our names on the check, but then because I had to go through the long process of changing my name, and because they would not cash the check with just his name on it, we had to wait months before we could cash any checks.
You should consider just putting the grooms name on the check because his name doesn't change and the check can be cashed.

If you are still unsure, get them an american express gift card, or cash.

If you are from the bride's side - Bride's MAIDEN NAME
if you are from the groom's side - Groom's name

Please do not write the checks in the Bride's newly married name. These checks may not process or take a while to process. Until the bride faxes her marriage license to the bank and updates her social security card, it is very difficult to prove her new name.

When those 500.00 and 1K checks are sitting there and they newly weds are unable to cash them, its not a great feeling.

Pick only ONE of the two to write it out to.

If you write it out to both and they do not have a joint account, they won't be able to deposit or cash it, and it will be a hassle.

Make the payee whomever you are closest to and write a note tot he other person in the memo.

you can put Mr & Mrs. "John Doe" as the payee...that way both are recognized as a gift to each of them. They will both have to sign the check I'm sure...but that shouldnt be a problem.

You can put Mr. and Mrs. Smith...but I wouldn't put the bride's married or maiden name (either or) because they may not have changed it yet, or vice versa.

I had a lot of problems depositing checks when they wrote my married name on them because I hadn't changed it yet. We also had problems when they put both of our names and our last name.

I would stick to Mr. OR Mrs. John Doe. If it shows his whole name, then it shouldn't be a problem.

I also agree with the check card idea. But, if you don't want to go to your bank, they have them at places like Kroger and Wal-Mart now. Just purchase them with the amount you want on them. They can use them anywhere credit cards are accepted.

Mr. OR Mrs. John Smith... that way, if they do not have a joint account yet, either one of them can cash it... why not bypass that awkwardness and get them a Visa or Mastercard gift card instead?? Your bank should be able to provide you with this wonderful credit card that can be used anywhere and doesn't have a "name" on it....just the amount you want to give.

I always write the check to whoever I am the closest to. It is a royal pain for both to sign all those checks.
