My dog has really bad arthritis and when we seem to be in the winter months, it gets worse. He can't go up and down stairs anymore. He can't move very well. He has a hard time getting up and walking around. Is there anything that I can do or give him to help him and give him some pain relief?

This is an excellent product. I checked out the testimonials, and they are for real> http://springtimeinc.com/product/121/2

Also, a heated bed, availble at your pet supply shops or online, will help a lot..Also, the 'Bottoms Up" leash for him will help him, and your back..> http://images.google.com/images?svnum=10&hl=en&rls=GGGL,GGGL:2006-18,GGGL:en&sa=X&oi=spell&resnum=0&ct=result&cd=1&q=bottoms+up+leash&spell=1
You could likely make one..

Your vet has several different treatment options that you can explore. Some of your options are pain pills, anti-inflammatory, physical therapy, vitamin supplements, etc.
Some things you can do yourself include exercising him. Nothing strenuous, just take him for a leisurely walk at least once a day. The more you can keep his joints moving, the less stiff he is going to be. Massaging his joints gently may also help. Get him a heated, therapeutic bed as well. Also, if he is the least bit overweight, this will affect his joints. Make sure that you keep his weight down.
You can also give him Aspirin, either baby or buffered. You will need to check with your vet to determine the proper dosage though. Do NOT give him any OTC pain medicine other than Aspirin as the rest of them can be deadly to animals.

I have worked in three different vet clinics (four if you include subbing) and had a dog suffer this same ailment. My suggestion if cost is no problem, then purchase the dog anti-inflammatory at your local vet or Walmart. (It's just shark cartilage...even human doses work, just remember the size of your dog compared to a human)....If cost is an issue, (and against a vets advice, but it works) and depending on the size of your dog, give him an aspirin. If he is large give him half, if medium a quarter, if smaller about the same, if not less. This works to MASK THE PAIN ONLY. The other "shark cartilage" product actually benefits as it lubricates the joints and this is what the dog needs.

I buy some biscuits at PetsMart that is for senior dogs/joint health...just threw out the box. Anyway, they have glucosaime and I think chondrotin in them. It seems to help my dog.

Good luck.

"Glucosamine" is often given to dogs with arthritis. You can get this through any of the larger pet stores, your vet, or holistic animal-healing sites on-line.

Don't give him any human medicine, it is toxic and can be fatal. The best things are NSAIDs- non-steroidal anti-inflammatories (like aspirin for people). You have to get it from the vet but it can make your dog like a puppy again, all pain free and so happy.
