Don't self medicate or prescribe as what might be fine for others, maybe totally wrong or even dangerous for you, see the psychiatrist and talk to them, they will then decide if and what type of medicine you need as they are qualified to deal with this type of problem.Good luck.

If you have a reputable doctor, then they will prescibe it if it is appropriate.
There are newer drugs on the market, along with a host of older drugs that might be alternatives to Xanax.
I'm curious, why do you think you need Xanax? Going to a full-fledged psychiatrist (what, $250 per hour or more?) for Xanax is a little like swatting flies with a cannon here...
Finally, if you go in asking for Xanax, the doc will assume that you've been abusing it, or will abuse it, and will start to treat you for drug abuse.

the doc decides what to prescribe based on what you share... if what you share indicates that xanax is the drug of choice to address the symptoms that are affecting you, then he will prescribe xanax... then again, if the xanax salesperson wasn't particularly "friendly" and other drug company's rep was, you might not get xanax even if it was the ideal drug... there are so many pills out there that address similar symptoms...
your asking this way makes me think that its more empty pocket syndrome that you want to fix... in which case I prescribe getting a job

you cant neccessarily just go up to the psychiatrist and say hey, i want to be put on Xanax...the doctor will prescribe what he feels is best for you and it may not be your drug of choice..
doctors are doctors for a reason, they are looking out for your well being, however, they just wont prescribe whatever drug you crave

Seeing how xanax is a controlled subtance if you ask for it they will assume your a "drug seeker". Tell them you have anxiety and you need something for your nerves. They might prescribe ativan which is just as effective. If you feel like you need something then voice that.

What this group is saying in their own way, is please go the psychiatrist. Develop a relationship with him or her. Open up -- discuss your problems.
Your pyschiatrists hopefully is a professional who will treat the whole you. And that includes trying to find out if you do or don't need any drugs.
Life is very short - enjoy the days...
