I have the same problem! What do you buy someone you barely know to say 'im so happy for you'. I figured vouchers. Can't go wrong with vouchers, or maybe some champagne glasses, or maybe some forks. Basically anything that you can eat with, drink with or spend. yeah.

towels are always needed, you can never have enough bath towels, my mom used to buy a set of bath towels and roll it so it looked like a dog, it was so cute!
Photo frames are also things that people never seem to have enough of.
Or this may sound cheesy, but what about a gift card to either a restaurant or to a grocery store, if they're going on a honeymoon they will not keep food in the fridge and will need to get some when they get back.

An engagement party is not a wedding shower, so you aren't expected to bring a gift, but a card is always nice. If the party is at their house, you could bring a gift for the hosts, like a bottle of wine.

Something that is $50 or less, as you will most likely be spending some money in the future between showers and the wedding and of course clothes, hotel, travel expenses, etc. for you. A nice bottle of wine is always nice and a good way to build a wine collection. Ask your local wine shop for a good choice.

A gift card or just give cash that way they can use it as they may need. I have done this for several engagements and it was the best gift they got and really appreciated . Most of the time money is short supply when getting reading for a wedding , honeymoon and a place to live together.

Buying gifts for anybody can be confusing at times. My advice is to find out what they like to do for fun ie. if they like to go to the beach get them a weekend excursion (spending only what you can afford) gift certificate, if they like to take pictures then possibly a video camera, Polaroid, if they want to try skydiving then sky diving lessons will come in handy. If they mountain climb then you can get them - sun, screen, hats, etc for 2 (not to mention the bandages and the antiseptic wash for all the bumps and bruises they will get).
Now if you want to stick with something for the house then you could buy them an appliance of your choice or that they have registered for at the store. Or how about getting them a tree- let them plant a tree in their yard, park etc on their wedding day in honor of their new life together. How about a guest bed room rug, sheet and bedspread set (if they don't already have an extra one). Crystal vase, crystal bowl. Bottom line is be creative, find out what they like and think along those lines. If all else fails you could get them a gift certificate to your or their favorite store and let them get what they want.

I agree w/ Sarah P. I wouldn't buy them an engagement gift. I've never even heard of this. I'd wait & buy them a wedding gift. If you must, maybe something like a nice candle or a bottle of wine.

I would say a gift certificate to a great restaurant. With all the planning for a wedding, they might be strapped for cash.
OR...if you want to spend a bit more, his and her gift cert's for a massage. It's something they can use now or before the wedding to de-stress.
