I would probabaly stop doing pushups...but thats just me...I dont like to be choked.

get some at the gym to help you out as this could a big problem or something small like incorrect postion maybe the weights are to heavy for you and you need to work on other areas of the body first
but get someone at the gym to help you out if they won't help you you are at the wrong gym and find somewhere that help is no hassel

you are probably doing the exercise wrong. Keep your chin on your chest, do not raise your head when doing the push up, see if that helps.
