Well scoop it a lot for one. It should be changed out at least once a week. Mess around with different litter and see what works best. I have 5 indoor cats and we use Fresh Step multi cat. People who have visited say they can't believe we have so many cats because it doesn't even smell like we have cats. That's a good thing lmao.

Clean it frequently! Also, sprinkle a little baking soda in the bottom before you add litter. Try a different cat litter. My absolute favorite is called Feline Pine. It comes in a green bag, and it is pine pellets. It is fresh, and stops the odor more than anything else I have ever used. It is wonderful. When the pellets get wet, they expand, and absorb it up. The pine smell counteracts the ammonia from the urine. I find that the best thing to do if your cat poops is to immediately remove it from the box, flush it, or dispose of it somewhere else. This will keep the box fresh longer.

As far as wet food, I don't think it's good for your cat to eat wet food all the time. The hard stuff has got to be better for their teeth. But, i don't see a problem with giving it as a treat every now and then.

The best kitty litter is one that your cat uses and you can deal with. I like cheap scoopable stuff because I don't actually have to empty the whole box but once every month or two, just scoop a couple of times a week. For my foster kittens I use wood pellets since clumping litter can be dangerous if they eat it. These are like Feline Pine or you can buy the wood pellets for wood stoves much cheaper. You actually have to empty the box fairly often though, when all the pellets have turned to sawdust. Other than that you scoop the solid waste ASAP because the pellets have no odor control abilities for the solids :) I buy the cheapest litter trays for my fosters and have no problems. My resident cat is a big dude so I bought him a storage bin. With the "litter boxes" in the pet department he would just back up to the edge and poop over the side. Don't bother with the small litter box, get the large one. Then if you can't scoop twice a day they have room to go again without stepping in the old stuff. Onto food. Yes, Whiskas is bad. It's nutritionally complete but just barely. It's like eating frozen pizza every night. Iams is not much better. Look for something with no corn, wheat, or by-products. Look all the way down the ingredients list. Here are some good brands - Wellness Innova/EVO Taste of the Wild* Blue Buffalo/Wilderness Chicken Soup for the Cat Lover's Soul* Natural Balance California Natural Felidae* Orijen * a little cheaper

Wet food is actually the best for cats. The old idea that dry food is better for their teeth has actually been proven false (most cats do not chew their dry food much, and if they did chew it, the carbs would hurt their teeth rather than help).

Why is dry food not as good for cats? It is between 30-55% carbohydrates, while wet food is at the most 15%. Why does this matter?

Because cats are what are called 'obligate carnivores' - they must eat meat to survive. In the wild, their diet is composed of only 3-5% of carbohydrates, from a meaty, wet source.

So why are we feeding our cats a DRY diet of carbohydrates? It's mostly for our own convenience, but the cats pay in the form of diabetes, dehydration, and other problems. But it's easier to plunk down a bowl of dry all day, than open up cans and dole out wet meals.

We ought to be feeding our cats a diet of almost solely meat.

How to make the litter box less smelly: buy high quality food. Foods with fillers like corn, rice, any grain make a cat's stools big and bulky, and stinky. They cannot digest grain and it passes through them mostly undigested. Of course, all poop stinks, but if you buy a high quality food there will be less to poop out.

On a canned food, grain should be FIFTH on the list or less.

As far as the food everyone has different opinions on it I don't see any problem with it if they also get some hard, my cats love both. My sister was told by her vet that feeding a cat that doesn't drink enough water wet food will help get them some of the water they need. It helps keep them from getting bladder problems.
As far as the litter box goes it needs to be cleaned more and try different litters to find one to help with the smell. We even wash out the box so often and let bleach sit in it for a bit to keep it in check.

I use Tidy Cat clumping litter for Multiple Cats and add Arm & Hammer Cat Box Deodorizer. For my ONE male cat scooping every two to three days keeps odor practically non-existant if it's there at all.

By "wet cat food" do you mean watered dry food or canned food?

Neither is very good for their teeth. The teeth need the exercise of chewing the crunchy stuff to keep them from comming loose and falling out. Crunching on dry food also helps to clean the teeth. I have always fed my cats Purina Cat Chow in a free choice manner...meaning their bowls always have food in them. I just use bowls that can be "eaten" empty in two to three days so the food doesn't get stale. I use canned food only for treats or for a sick cat that won't eat anything else.

baking soda. Sprinkle in box before you put in the litter. I have six boxes in my computer room and four cats and it works pretty good. My vet thinks a high quality dry food is better, but occasionally for a treat I let them have wet food. Dry food isn't as messy or smelly. My cats love Purina and I switch kinds.

Use clumping cat litter, with or add arm-n-hammer baking soda.

Wet food is fine for cats. Dry does help clean and strengthen their teeth, though. Keepa bowl of it next to their regular wet food bowl for snacks during the day. Older cats sometimes can't eat dry food, tho.

Giving your cat wet food is important because cats do not have a strong instict to drink much water as in the wild, they would get all their fluids from a kill. They need wet food in their diet so they do not dehydrate. You can feed dry as well, but offer both types, don't rely on just one.
