I got my first tattoo yesterday (made another question about that, and people were SO incredibly helpful so thank you)- it is all black and on my lower back. I am washing it gently with antibacterial soap and applying the A&D ointment, it doesn't hurt at all. I did notice that when I rub the ointment on a tiny little bit of black flakes off on my hand. Is this normal?
I thought it wasn't supposed to start flaking for a week.

Oops I forgot, so does this mean that in a week it will really begin to peel and itch big time?

Its normal, some flake some don't, some scab up also, what ever you do do not pick at the scabs, they will come off normally if you pick at them or scratch it you will loose your color.
I hope you enjoy your new tattoo.

Flaking and peeling is fine that happens because of the location of the tattoo and the healing process. Generally tattoos are healed in about 7 days some take a few days or so longer. For at least 7 days keep washing it using your fingertips NOT a wash cloth. Apply a thin layer of the A&D ointment, don't keep it covered try keeping clothes off of the area as much as possible.
After 7 days if it is heelled then you will want to apply lotion that don't have perfume in it to your tattoo. The lotion will keep the skin smooth and make your tattoo look better.

When I got my first tatoo it was all pink and there was no flaking of the color. It started to peel in like 5 days.
I got an all black tatoo on my lower back just like you and the black flaked off as well. I was very scared that it would look dull and the ink would be skipped in some places. But after it finished peeling it looked great.
All three of my tatooes peeled in about 5 days. But I would not worry about the little bit of black that flakes off. It should look great once the healing is done!! Good luck and keep using that ointment!!

It's normal for that to happen. It's just dead skin. That happened with all my tattoos. I have 5 and each one of them peeled and/or flaked at some point. Some sooner than others. As long as you're keeping it clean and putting the ointment on it, there really shouldn't be anything to worry about. If it starts to get red and starts to look like it's infected, though, you need to go to the doctor right away.

I just depends on your skin. Some people flake within the first twenty four hours of a tat, and some might not flake till a week after. It's really normal. Also, you may peel longer than say your friends if they have a tat. It's all part of your skin and how your skin heals. hope that's helpful.

yes it is normal. but that is not the piling stage. what you are talking about is where the ink is bleeding out and your not keeping enough ointment on it. Get some of the sticks that doctors use(pop sickle sticks) and but the ointment on that then apply to you tattooo. You can never but to much. DO NOT allow your tatto to dry. make sure it always has enough ointment on it.
When piling does start in about 3 to 4 weeks stop using the ointment a use non scented lotion. During the stage of piling it will itch DO NOT scratch.

It does sound like you are letting it get to dry, Another product to use as well is Vitamin E, it come is pills that you breack and put on the tatoo. As for the healling process the length of time can vary depending on the person. My first tatoo started scabbing in two days. I was using Poly sporian on it thought.
Just remember every tattoo place has a different way of after care for tatoo's.

Yes it is normal. I got my tattoo a couple of years ago. It takes about 2 weeks to fully heal. The peeling is normal and is just apart of the healing process. No worries.
