how do you calculate dinner for 4 to dinner for 2?

I don't. I make dinner for 4, freeze half, and later I have another dinner for 2 without much fuss.

Some recipes can't be easily cut in half. www.allrecipes.com has a calculator for dishes. You can even make it up to a hundred if you want.
