Being a cancer patient, I have read every possible theory on smoking causing answer and all the conclusions say that cancer is not related to tobbaco. If it were so every smoker should have had cancer. Its just bad luck in people who get the cancer - other smoke, drink and party like there is no tomorrow. Smoking however is bad for ones health as it creates seious problems later on in life and thats a bad scene. Its best to throw out that packet today and lead a happy healthy life.

It's not the tobacco, it's the chemical nicotine that affects the smoker.

Nicotine acts on the nicotinic acetylcholine receptors. In small concentrations it increases the activity of these receptors, among other things leading to an increased flow of adrenaline, a stimulating hormone. The release of adrenaline causes an increase in heart rate, blood pressure and respiration, as well as higher glucose levels in the blood. Cotinine is a break-down product of nicotine which remains in the blood for up to 48 hours and can be used as an indicator of a person's exposure to smoke. In high doses, nicotine will cause a blocking of the nicotinic acetylcholine receptor, which is the reason for its toxicity and its effectiveness as an insecticide.

In addition, nicotine increases dopamine levels in the reward circuits of the brain. Studies have shown that smoking tobacco inhibits monoamine oxidase (MAO), an enzyme responsible for breaking down monoaminergic neurotransmitters such as dopamine, in the brain. It is currently believed that nicotine by itself does not inhibit the production of monoamine oxidase (MAO), but that other ingredients in inhaled tobacco smoke are believed to be responsible for this activity. In this way, it generates feelings of pleasure, similar to that caused by cocaine and heroin, thus causing the addiction associated with the need to sustain high dopamine levels.

what tabacco does is that it damages the lungs over time. in your respiratory system you have little hairs called cilia which grab onto mucus, pollen, dust and so forth. as you smoke the cilia loses its elasticility and you will have no little hairs to trap the junk from and remove it. also, it damages the lungs since it attacks them and therefore leading to lung cancer. my uncle did smoke for more than 20 years, and ended up with a sick cough as the years progressed. he also started to have short breath therefore it was horrible! when you smoke you feel as though you cannot breathe 100%, feel as though you have asthma or emphasyma-smoking actually causes emphasyma which is irreversible!my best advice: never to start moking or if you do then to try and quit as soon as you can!
