Try having your mother-in-law or another trusted friend or relative come to YOUR home for a few weeks to "dog-sit", then have them just come for a hour or 2 a day...then every other day, until you can just gradually get the dog used to being alone while you work

He should be fine staying home alone. If he has always been with someone during the day, he will be lonely at first but will get used to being alone. You could maybe go to a shelter and get him an adult companion dog. A puppy might be too feisty for an older dog.

Candleinthewind's suggestion is good. Or, your mother-in-law can start leaving him alone so he gets used to it. She should just leave for 15 or 30 minutes the first couple times to see how he reacts. If he is okay, she should leave for an hour or so every day. She should leave at different times, too, so he doesn't get used to a pattern.

I would do it in stages. Start with an hour then when he is ok with that move him to two hours and so on. Give him plenty of toys and move stuff you don't want chewed. If you can pop home in your break I would advise that to let him have a wee. I think it will be fine.

You can crate train the dog. Actually some are very fond of the crates, it is a small space all their own. Mine will go in the crate (I leave it open) whenever he feels like it.

I would crate train the dog. Although he is older, he can become acclimated to the crate over a weekend. He is obviously old enough to hold his urine while you are at work.

i don't understand the question? if you have a backyard the dog should stay home. I don't see why you would have to train the dog to stay at home unless you don't have a fenced yard.

Unless he can open the door and drive your car, he's destined to stay home, isn't he?
